Transport strategies: the battle against congestion and pollution

fit

The emergence of congestion and pollution as major urban and global problems has resulted in an active transport policy environment.

Technical solutions have been and are being developed to meet the challenges of congestion and pollution but these solutions are still largely distrusted by the public.

In the struggle to gain public acceptance for policies of road pricing, congestion pricing, tolling and integrated transport, local and traffic authorities are going on line.

Ensuring the transport awareness of the ordinary citizen and indeed ordinary child is important in the achievement of better transport systems and the development of customised web sites to meet local transport awareness needs in the USA demonstrates that the issue of levels of transport awareness is now being addressed.

The following links give an insight into this process.

On line working papers:

Transport awareness campaigns

On line transport forums:

Mew information communication technologies have enabled the development of on line transport forums. It becomes easier for the range of agencies serving an area or region to link together in transport policy activities. In Scotland, Transform Scotland provides an indication of the beginning of such activities. In the North East of England, NEAT - North East Action on Transport provides an example of direct community involvement in on line Transport Forums.
